MEDIA RELEASE: Wendy Bourne Encourages More People to Volunteer in Their Local Community

State Member for Ipswich West, Wendy Bourne MP, is encouraging local residents to consider volunteering, saying there has never been a better time to get involved and make a real difference in the community.

“Whether you’ve recently moved to our area, are looking to meet new people, have retired, or simply want to give something back, volunteering is one of the most rewarding things you can do,” Ms Bourne said.

“I recently saw a call from the Rosewood Lions Club looking for people who are passionate about helping others, building friendships and giving back to their community. It reminded me just how many wonderful organisations across Ipswich West rely on volunteers to keep doing their incredible work.”

“Every day, volunteers are quietly making our community stronger. They’re supporting organisations like Meals on Wheels, our local sporting clubs, helping at community centres, assisting our wonderful emergency services such as the SES and the Rural Fire Brigade, fundraising for important causes, working in school P&C’s, caring for our environment, and mentoring young people and organising events that bring us together.”

Research consistently shows that volunteering benefits not only the community but the volunteer as well. Giving your time to others can improve mental wellbeing, reduce stress, build confidence, create lasting friendships and even improve physical health through staying active and connected.

“For people who are new to Ipswich West, volunteering is one of the best ways to become part of the community. You’ll meet people from all walks of life, build lifelong friendships and discover just how welcoming our local community really is.”

“It’s also a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills, share your own experience and, for younger people or those returning to the workforce, develop valuable experience that can strengthen future employment opportunities.”

Ms Bourne said there is a volunteer opportunity to suit almost everyone, regardless of age, experience or available time.

“You don’t need special qualifications to make a difference. Whether you can spare a few hours a month or a few hours each week, your contribution matters.”

“I encourage anyone who has ever thought about volunteering to take that first step. Reach out to a local community group, sporting club, charity or service organisation and ask how you can help.”

“Volunteers are the heart of our community, and together they make Ipswich West the wonderful place it is to live.”
