Wendy Bourne, State Member for Ipswich West, has joined Rosewood residents in voicing concerns over a proposed development at 15 Edward Street, Rosewood, following a well-attended community meeting earlier this week.
More than 70 local residents attended the meeting to hear about the proposed project, raising a range of issues about its potential impact on the town.
Residents raised several key concerns, including:
- Increased pressure on local road infrastructure not equipped to handle higher traffic volumes
- High density of homes planned for the site
- Strain on community infrastructure such as schools, roads, sporting facilities, and parking at Rosewood Railway Station
- Development being proposed in a flood-prone area
- Flood mitigation plans involving significant land filling, with no guarantee it won’t increase flood risks for neighbouring properties
- Small lot sizes and lack of recreational space in the design
- Failure to preserve or reflect Rosewood’s historic character and layout
“Development is needed, we are facing a housing shortage, but it must be done so that surrounding residents can have their say and be heard.” Ms Bourne said.
Residents at the meeting expressed disappointment that proposals of this scale could move forward without meaningful engagement with the community.
“I am calling on developers to go the extra distance. Even if the application doesn’t require community consultation, they should still be getting out into the community to listen to the surrounding neighbourhoods”, Ms Bourne said
Community members have made it clear they are not opposed to new housing, but are demanding developments that prioritise safety, existing infrastructure, and reflect Rosewood’s heritage.
“I will continue to represent residents in Ipswich West who feel their voices are not being heard”, Ms Bourne added
